Gardening with Your Kids
I love to write about gardening with your kids each summer, especially because I am a self-proclaimed gardening addict. I always try to involve my whole family in this tradition. I’ve also been doing a lot of surfing online about the topic to see if there is something knew that I can learn. This year, I am incorporating some organic vegetables into my array of veggies.
You’ll find some tips about composting, growing tomatoes and ways to involve your children on a previous post titled “Summer Gardening with Your Kids”.
Gardening Resources
This topic is almost endless when looking online, but I’ll mention the resources that I enjoy. Some are related to organic gardening, including sites where you can order organic plants online.
- Burpee.com is a wonderful resource for almost every aspect of gardening…buying plants, seeds, gardening tips & tools, advice and videos. This includes both veggie and flower gardening, organic and not. I LOVE this site.
- The Natural Gardening Company is the oldest certified organic nursery in the USA. You can purchase your seeds and plants online for shipping at the appropriate planting time for your zone.
- Ed Hume Seeds has a great resource for what to grow for a family of four. They offer a seed planting chart. This has been a great help to me.
- If space is an issue, check out How to Grow a Vertical Garden in Raised beds.
- If you live in an area like me, you’ll need to consider a fence to keep the critters out. I found some great tips at OrganicGardening.com. They offer tips for do-it-yourself fencing.
I’ve also found a fantastic blog called “5 Minutes for Mom” and they are giving away Love Your Veggies Books & Garden Supplies. All you need to do is go to the blog and make a comment. How easy is that.
I hope I’ve helped you a bit. It is so important to make gardening a family oriented tradition. We have a great time with it and my boys really love getting dirty.
Let me know if you have any great tips, ideas or other input….even if you have a question, I’d love to hear from you and find you the answer you are looking for.
Thanks and happy gardening!

My thought of the day: As you may or may not know from previous posts, I have two boys…a 4-year old and a 5-year old. They are polar opposites in most ways. One is high-maintenance, one is laid back. One is artistic, one is more about wrestling and rough-housing. One loves competitive sports, the other hates playing against people because he will risk losing. We’ve had a lot of challenges over the past 5+ years, and I know we have many many more to come. There are a couple phases that have been extremely difficult for us, causing us to actually research the answers to our questions. One was that our first born had tons of sleep issues…always crying, never falling asleep unless he was being held and rocked (although, in hindsight, I’m certain we created this issue). The second biggest issue we’ve had so far is the tantrums. If there is a Guinness Book record for longest and loudest temper tantrum, I am certain that my 5-year old would have won!
This leads to my next question…
Whether you have kids or not, I would love to hear what your issues or questions have been? If you have kids, what were your biggest challenges? If you don’t have kids, but spend time with some one else’s kids, you must have things you’d like to vent about. Just post it here.
If you have a Twitter account, and you want additional entries, just re-tweet and comment here about it.

My thought of the day: Valentines Day has always been a bit controversial to some. I know that it can be tough for some single people, although when I was single, there was always some one to surprise with a small gesture of love, such as for a niece, nephew, or close friend. I understand that it has turned into another excuse for retailers to tug on our “love-stings”, but I also enjoy it very much myself, especially now that I have kids. I love to think of something simple and inexpensive, but thoughtful and sweet to give to the ones that I love. For my Husband, it could be as simple as getting a babysitter and going out to dinner for a couple hours. I vividly remember when I was a child, my Mom ALWAYS got me a giant chocolate Kiss every singe year. BOY, did I love that! It’s a tradition I’d love to continue with my children. For those that are single out there…what’s wrong with buying yourself something special…you deserve it!
This leads to my next question…
What, if anything, do you do on Valentines day for yourself or the ones that you love?

What a cool gift for a child. Kids love to hear or read their names in books and CDs. What a great idea and a great thing to try to win for any child’s upcoming birthday.
My thought of the day: The recent election has been a whirlwind. So many emotions from so many people. Some are negative and some are positive, but thankfully I have heard mostly positive. This is the first election where I was thrilled with the presidential selection. I actually watched some of Inauguration day for the first time ever. I remember thinking how exhausted Michele and Obama must be after that very long day of ceremonies and balls. For some reason I just feel so differently with this president. He seems more human to me. I have high hopes for Obama and look forward to see how he fixes the mess our country is in.
This leads to my next question…
Did you feel any strong emotions (either negative or positive) on election day or on Inauguration day? I would love to hear about it.

I don’t know about you, but I love to have the occasional glass of wine, mostly due to its health benefits, of course. Make sure to enter this one!
My thought of the day: There are lots of things that I love to do…some more than others of course. I try to do something that I love each and every day. We all need some “release”, or some way to forget about our troubles. My methods of relaxing are probably simpler than others, but none the less, they relax me and that is all that matters! I like to play a game called Bubble Shooter at a site called Twitter Break…I’m an addict. I like to play games with my boys. I like to watch very funny movies with my Husband. And, I like to have a glass of red wine once in a while.
This leads to my next question…
What is it that you like to do to relax at the end of a stressful day / week?

Our next giveaway is for: A Toddler Spa Towel Wrap, compliments of Vanessa from www.michaelgrace.etsy.com.
My thought of the day: I’ve probably had more that just a few embarrassing moments in my life, but one more recent one comes to mind. It was so embarrassing that a national magazine thought so too, and they published it in the January issue of First (for Women) Magazine. If you’re at the grocery store or your local pharmacy, pick up a copy for a chuckle.
I will sum up the story by saying this: Don’t ever pack a water/gel bra away for too long because the fabric surrounding the water/gel becomes VERY weak resulting in a potential leak. Quite embarrassing at a formal party. That is all I will say!
This leads to my next question…
What is one of your most embarrassing moments? We all need a laugh now and then…help us out here.

Our next giveaway is for: Travel Wipe Case and matching Burp Cloth, compliments of Shawna from www.ballerinasandbuckaroos.com.
My thought of the day: I used to have a New Year’s Resolution every year. And, every year, I always lost track of it. I became disappointed in myself for not sticking it out. It would (maybe) last for a few weeks or a few months, but ultimately it would get lost in the shuffle and before I knew it, I was back to old habits again and wondering where I went wrong.
This year I have decided to ease up on myself. I now label my “resolution” as something different…or rather, I don’t label it at all. In other words, I just make a decision to give some things a try and if they don’t work out, they don’t work out. NO pressure.
This year, as with most years, I aim to be a better person, a better friend, a better wife, a better Mom. In addition, as I reach the so called “hill” in my life, I aim to become more healthy by eating more frequently and smaller portions. I am going to attempt to add MUFAs to each small meal…I’m learning that MUFAs, or monounsaturated fatty acids, such as nuts, olives, dark chocolate and olive oils, can greatly improve your overall health as well as assist in weight loss. I have a couple other small hopes for the New Year, but I don’t want to bore you.
This leads to my next question…
Do you do a New Year’s Resolution? If so, will you divulge it to the world in this post?
The deadline for giveaway #6 entry is 11:59pm EST, Friday January 2nd, 2009. To review the rules of our giveaway, please CLICK HERE.
Holiday Giveaway #5
We’re up to Holiday Giveaway #5! I hope you all keep checking back, because we have some really great prizes coming up. But first….
Congratulations to the winner of our most recent Holiday Giveaway!
Our 4th Giveaway Winner is Toni @ Photo Bug Baby! Toni will be receiving a Baby Beebo with signing DVD, compliments of Malaika from www.signwithme.webs.com and www.millionairemamas.info.
The Baby Signs® Program teaches babies to use simple, easy-to-do gestures for communicating with their parents and caregivers. These gestures or “signs” represent an item or concept, like “cat,” “eat,” or “all gone.”
I truly wish I had known this was around when my boys were babies, especially with my first. It is so hard to not know what your child needs or wants. This would have helped to take so much stress away.
Ok, now to the next giveaway…
Our next giveaway is for: A Wings-To-Wear T-Shirt, compliments of Yolanda from www.cwingsbooks.com.
What creative t-shirts. Ya gotta see ‘em!
My thought of the day: I think back to when I was younger…I know, I know, how could I possibly remember that many years ago. Well, I remember bits and pieces. I think back to christmas time with my family. We always had very nice holidays at home. We were fortunate…no traumas to cope with. I specifically remember one Christmas. I was 16 1/2. I had opened what I thought was all of my gifts. I got a new telephone! My own phone! I was some one now. But, the last little box that was handed to me was the kicker. I opened it and it was a key. It took a few moments to understand, but when I looked out the window into the snowy yard, I saw what it meant. A new car!!! Well, not really “new”, but my own car! My eyes filled. It is the most memorable gift in my young life that I received at Christmas. It was shocking and unexpected.
This brings me to my next question…
Do you have a most memorable Christmas gift in your past? It can be something that you had received or something that you had given…I’d love to hear both.
